Crepes and Apes!

The weather was lovely and sunny yesterday, so we decided to walk down to Queen Street and treat ourselves to some yummy crepes at 'Cafe Crepe'!  The crepes were huge and soo filling (especially when you order their special, which I did, with Nutella, Hazelnuts, Bananas and Grand Marnier :D ) ... so we didn't eat much for the rest of the day!!

 After that we went to the movies and saw 'Rise of the Planet of the Apes' , and it was amaaazzing - a 10/10! I loved it!  I would say it's on the same level as movies like Avatar (even though avatar had much more special effects); but planet of the apes had a great storyline (I was definitely cheering for the apes, not the humans hehe).

The Body Shop Greatest Makeup Event

Yesterday, my sister and I went to a Body Shop & Virgin Mobile event at the Yonge-Dundas square... and of course, it was raining!! But it wasn't just a light drizzle - it was like a torrential downpour! Obviously that didn't stop us from going... we were getting those free makeovers no matter what! lol

Anyhoozles, when we arrived the Black eyed Peas were blaring from the DJ's stand and we lined up in the VIP que (since we had the body shop membership card).  They were handing out samples from their new arrivals, so we each got a packet of their Vitamin E moisturizer, a Shea Butter & Sesame Oil Body Balm, and their new fragrance 'Dreams Unlimited'.   Once we signed in, we were shown to a makeup artist who sat us down and did our makeup for us.  My sister's makeup looked amahzing... mine one the other hand, was not that great.  The makeup artist who did mine was really nice and friendly, but she did my eye make up waay to dark (which didn't suit me at all), she didn't blend my foundation properly, and she didn't even put mascara which completely ruined the look!  And to top it all off, my sister got a $10 dollars off coupon and a drink and I left empty handed- hmph!

I'm still glad we went though, because after the event we went straight to the Body Shop in Eaton Centre and used the coupon to buy the Extra Virgin Minerals foundation which is brilliant (made from olive oil from Italy!), and a few other products like blush, highlighter and lipgloss.  We had a good time, so thank you to the Body Shop!

Later on that evening, we went to see "Crazy Stupid Love" at the AMC.  While I love Steve Carell and all his movies and shows, I wasn't that impressed with the movie... it was a regular 'feel good' film, with a few laughs here and there - so it was pleasant but not that funny. (6.8/10)

The Green Hornet

So I went to see the Green Hornet today in 3D, since they didn't have a regular showing.  I thought it was an entertaining action movie and fun to ; it would be most popular with teenagers, I would think, since it has the over-the-top action scenes and slow motion martial arts stunts .

The Green Hornet stars Seth Rogan as Britt Reid, Jay Chou as his partner Kato, and Cameron Diaz as Reid's assistant .  The storyline wasn't very original,  but the movie as a whole was very entertaining especially if you like Seth Rogan's humour and his bumbling personality.... and his assistant Kato was very good too !  I would have liked to see more of him!

Brief plot: After his father's death, Britt Reid inherits his dad's newspaper company which he doesn't want to run and doesn't care about it.  After meeting his late father's mechanic, Kato, they both become friends and decide to form a team (since Reid is very intelligent and Kato is an experted engineer and martial artist, but both haven't been living up to their potential).  They decide to fight crime, by pretending to be villains and put a stop to the city's criminals.

I give this movie : 7/10

The King's Speech.... Speechless!

LOVE LOVE LOVE this movie!!!! It was amazing, and definitely confirmed what a great actor Colin Firth is!  His speech therapist played by Geoffrey Rush, and wife played by Helena Bonham Carter (another favourite of mine) were also brilliant!

The King's Speech is, as it was advertised, a historical drama, but it did have some comedic acts throughout... and an especially hilarious scene, which I won't ruin for you now!  I would highly recommend this to everyone!



For those unfamiliar with the story,  King George VI (Colin Firth) is introduced to Lionel Logue, a speech therapist who is known for his unorthodox methods to help patients with their stammer.  The two men build a friendship as Logue helps him overcome his speech impedement, and after his brother abdicates the throne, the King must deliver a radio broadcast at the beginning of World War II.

Disappointed in "The Dilemma"

As you can tell from the title of the post, I went to see the movie 'The Dilemma' last weekend... and what a waste of 2 hours of my life!  It was advertised as a comedy movie, and I was really looking forward to it especially because it starred two actors I really liked : Vince Vaughn and Kevin James!  Granted, the trailer wasn't hilarious but then some comedies don't show their funniest moments in their trailers.
Anyway!  It was more of a serious drama with few (moderately) funny moments sprinkled throughout i.e. a Drama disguised as a Comedy.  Vince Vaughn still had a role where he talks really quickly and rambles most of his lines - which I love in his movies, and Kevin James was goofy at times.
Throughout the entire film, there wasn't a single laugh-out-loud from the audience.... I was actually a little bored.  I know that some people did enjoy the movie, but maybe they were not looking forward to a comedy as much as I was.
I give this movie a 3.5/10.

The Phantom of the Opera

I was first introduced to the story of the Phantom of the Opera when I was very young.  We had a recorded VHS tape of the 1990 TV miniseries version, and I loved it!  There have been many adaptations of the novel "Le Fantôme de l'Opéra" by french writer Gaston Leroux, but the only story I was familiar with was from the TV miniseries.  In this version, the plot focused on the Phantom's childhood and past while showing him in a gentler and kinder light as compared to other adaptations and the novel.  Also, unlike the other movies, we never see the Phantom's face as he is always hidden behind his various masks.  This version starred Charles Dance as the Phantom/Erik and Teri Polo as Christine.  What I also liked about this film were the comedic scenes they included every now and then.

I have also seen Andrew Lloyd Webber's 2004 musical film, starring Gerard Butler as the Phantom and Emmy Rossum as Christine.   Being an adaptation of the Webber's 1986 musical, it was more focused on the singing and performances rather than the Phantom's history... but I also enjoyed it; mostly because I love Emmy Rossum's voice.  On the other hand, I felt Gerard Butler's singing could have been stronger and more operatic... overall it was very entertaining!

I hope to read the original novel, when/if I find it....
